The coffee
The peaberry varietal of this coffee delivers bold, concentrated flavours in every cup, featuring notes of blackcurrant, balanced mid-acidity, and a rich, full-bodied profile.
Farm/Producers
This coffee is grown from small-lot holders of the Nygeri County in the highlands of central Kenya. Locals, and members of the Othaya Farmer’s Co-operative Society deliver their harvested coffee to the co-ops owned and operated Rukira wet mills. Over the years the Rukira mill has won many awards from the coffee they have produced, and continue to support the farming practices of their members.
The process
This is a washed coffee, which is the most common method in applied at the Rukira wet mill. This process requires the ripe picked cherries, to be wet-pulped and wet fermented for 12-18 hours in concrete tanks, following this the coffee is thoroughly washed in concrete channels to remove any remaining mucilage, a.k.a 'washed process'. The coffee is then laid on raised beds to dry, until moisture reaches 10-12%. The drying process typically takes 12-21 days. Beans are transported to the dry mill and stored in parchment until milled for export. During dry milling beans are separated by machine based on size with a specific category assigned to these peaberries.
Why we like it
Kenya is know for producing full-bodied wine-like tasting coffee profiles, and this coffee is a perfect example of this. We also love these little round, dense pea shaped coffee beans, not only because they are super cute and fun to roast but also because the volume of peaberry production is always very small, making them extra exclusive! Peaberries are known for vibrant taste which is intense flavour and sweetness.
